Finding the Right Therapist

Starting therapy is a huge undertaking, emotionally, financially, and sometimes logistically. But one of the hardest parts about your therapeutic journey is finding a therapist that’s the right fit. There are so many apps and platforms now that let you swipe left or right on potential clinicians that it can start to feel like really one-sided online dating.

My best advice to someone new to their therapy journey is to shop around for the right fit. You can ask friends or family if they have had good experiences with specific therapists or clinics, you can ask your doctor, you can even ask Google. But having multiple options as a client can make it easier to find the person you feel comfortable with.

Speaking of comfortable, in the beginning, therapy can be somewhat awkward. You are put in a room (or a video chat) with a complete stranger, asked really personal probing questions, and you know basically nothing about the person sitting across from you. This vulnerability is jarring and uncomfortable for some people. Finding a therapist that you connect with and helps you feel comfortable (despite the inherent weirdness of the whole process) should be priority one. Bonus points if they take your insurance.

If your therapist isn’t a great fit, ask yourself why? Do they remind you of someone you dislike? Do they have qualities you dislike? Do you feel misunderstood? Recognizing the reason that you aren’t vibing is a great way to figure out what you actually need in a therapist. Most therapists are more than willing to discuss these thoughts with you, which is often a really therapeutic experience.

Good luck in your therapy journey! Remember: shop around, ask for input from people you trust, and don’t be afraid to change course if your therapist isn’t a great match.
